Glen Willard Suffel, 87 of Montpelier passed away Thursday afternoon February 14th at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home. He was born March 4, 1925 in Jefferson Township to Samuel and Alma M. (Thomas) Suffel. Glen graduated from Montpelier High School in 1945 and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After serving his country, Glen attended Ohio State University in Columbus for one year. While in college, he played trumpet for the O.S.U. marching band.
Returning to Montpelier, he married Betty A. Miller on May 26, 1951 at Stryker, Ohio. They attended the River of Life Worship Center in Montpelier. Glen had been a member of the Montpelier Lodge I.O.O.F #745 since 1955. He was a class #1 licensed ham radio operator call letters “W8HFJ” for over 70 years. His love for music continued as he played for Bus Widmer’s “Old Time Rube Band”. In later years, he played baritone in the Bryan City Band for approximately 10 years.
Glen retired from Mohawk Tools in 1991 after 39 years as a tool maker (journeyman).
Glen is survived by his wife Betty, two sons: David (Teresa) Suffel of Pearland, Texas, DeWayne Suffel and Kathy Woodring of Defiance; three daughters: Dorothy (Joe) Johnson of Monroe, Indiana, Jean (Robert) Wagner of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Marilyn (Joseph) Staniski of Montpelier; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Visitation for Glen will be Sunday February 17th from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m. at the Wilson-Geesey Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday February 18th at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home with Pastor Homer L. Miller to officiate. Due to the holiday, burial will not take place until Tuesday at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier. Preferred memorials are to the Montpelier Band Boosters or Williams County Amateur Radio Association.
