It’s an occasion shared by only the most dedicated of individuals and on May 9, 2026, before the Archbold Bluestreaks took the field for a non-league contest against Hicksville, that dedication took place.
Barb Short, former Archbold softball coach who led her team to three state championships in the 1980s, was honored.

The field, known only as Diamond 2, where Short molded and made champions of her Bluestreaks teams, was officially renamed and recognized as Coach Barb Short Field.
On hand were a number of former and current players and coaches to help the program’s most successful coach celebrate the honor.
Short was a 1969 graduate of Stryker High School and a 1973 Adrian College graduate, where she competed for one year in volleyball and four years in field hockey and basketball.
She received her Master of Health Education from University of Toledo in 1991.
Short started her teaching and coaching career at Dundee (Mich.) from 1973-75, teaching physical education, coaching volleyball and basketball, and serving as a cheerleading advisor.

In 1975, Short came to Archbold where she taught physical education and health in the Middle School for 28 years.
She started the junior high program at the Middle School in 1976 that included just four practices. In 1977 the junior high program went into a full season.
Short amassed 481 wins and 177 losses at the 7th and 8th grade level combined winning 25 tournaments.
Her softball head coaching career spanned 22 years from 1976-1997 and led her teams to 348 wins and 94 losses.
That includes 8 Northwest Ohio Athletic League championships, 20 sectional championships, 12 district championships, 6 regional championships (1980, ‘82, ‘84, ‘85, ‘86, ‘87), 3 state championships (‘82, ‘84, ‘86), and 1 state runner-up (‘85).

She was inducted into the Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1994, the Adrian College Athletic Hall of Fame for field hockey in 1996 and the Archbold High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
She was given the prestigious Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award in 1997 by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
The scoreboard in center field is adorned with sponsors of the program, but in big bold letters the words COACH BARB SHORT FIELD will be displayed going forward.
Under that are three words that described the legendary coach: Desire-Determination-Dedication; words that describe a career that put Archbold softball on the map.
