BRYAN CITY SCHOOLS BOARD OF EDUCATION: Board Recognizes State Qualifying Athletes

The Regular Meeting of the Bryan City School District Board of Education was held on Monday, March 13, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bryan Elementary Commons.

The board members present at roll call were Scott Benedict, Ben Camarillo, Deb Opdycke, Dustin Schlachter, and Caleb Turnbull.

Administrators present were Mark Rairigh, Kevin Schafer, Chad Bassett, Kacey Thormeier, Steve Alspaugh, Nate Keel, and Chad Savage.

Guests present were Dena Siebenaler, Matt Dominique, state qualifiers for basketball, wrestling, and swim/dive, and Lucas Bechtol from The Bryan Times.

Deb Opdycke moved and Ben Camarillo seconded a motion to approve the minutes of the February 13, 2023 regular board meeting and the March 1, 2023 special board meeting.

Student Spotlight: Mark Rairigh and all board members spoke and congratulated the girl’s basketball team, wrestlers, and members of swim and dive.

Four County by Ben Camarillo: As part of Career and Technical Education Month, Four County Career Center hosted a “Bring Your Parents (and Grandparents) To Lab Day.” “Celebrate Today, Own Tomorrow” was the theme for the month. There were over 500 parents and grandparents in attendance.

Kaci Alspaugh is one of the Leadership Team Members of the over 500 member Four County Career Center Skills USA Chapter.

In recognition of National FFA Week, Four County Career Center FFA Chapter officers were pleased to present the Defiance County Office of the OSU Extension with a plant grown in the greenhouse at the Career Center.

FCCC also hosted the FFA District 1 contests with 16 area schools attending.

In honor of Career & Technical Education Month, Four County Career Center hosted a luncheon prepared by the Culinary Arts Management/Chef Training students and Chef Peter Herold. Congressman Bob Latta; Timothy Schneider, NW Ohio Rep for J.D. Vance; Ohio Senator Robert McColley; Ohio Representative James Hoops; Ohio Representative Roy Klopfenstein; area Mayors and County Commissioners from the four county area spoke with students about their programs of study and the great things they were learning to prepare them for their careers.

Four County Career Center Skills USA Chapter members will be participating in the Ohio State Skills USA Competition held in Columbus on April 25 & 26, 2023. State Contestants from Bryan are – Chris Crabtree, Izayah Carter, Emma Anneshensley.

Four County Career Center Electrical students had the opportunity to use their skills to give back to the local community as they installed new LED lighting at the Hope Chest in Defiance.

In addition to the students donating their time to complete this project, McNaughton Mckay donated the LED lighting and Black Swamp Equipment donated the use of the scaffolding for the day.

Jacob McVay was one of the students that participated in the project.

February Students of the Month – Kasia Dick (Cosmetology); Chasity Shadbolt (Early Childhood Education) FCCLA Regional Contests – Anastasia Haas; Danae Booth. MS/HS report by Steve Alspaugh: 750 students across the four county area applied to attend 4 county career center.

520 were selected and around 80 of those were BHS students. Scholarship interviews – March 29th and 30th. NSCC job fair – April 4th – taking around a dozen students.

Summer School registration opened on March 3rd & closes on May 12th. We will once again be offering Health & Personal finance as an online class.

PE will be offered in person. Cost is $100, which doesn’t include fees for swimming or bowling.

Musical – Shrek April 14, 15, 16 (7:00/ 7:00/ 2:00) – tickets are on sale in the HS office and will be soon at the library tonight. Tickets are $10 (general admission – single price point).

Congratulations to two seniors who landed pieces in the top 25 of The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition and had two other pieces selected for display in the 253-piece exhibition. Regular Board Meeting March 13, 2023- Page 2.

Those seniors are Sam Kennedy and Allie Redhead. To make it to this level their pieces had to make it through the regional level.

Last year, there were over 8,000 pieces submitted at the regional level. There are 15 regions in Ohio and every high school in that region is invited to submit student work.

Pieces making it out of the regional level are then juried at the state level where the top 25 pieces are then selected to receive the Governor’s Award of Excellence.

This year 253 pieces were selected for the exhibition. Sam and Allie’s two pieces selected for the top 25 were “Aqueduct” by Sam and “Interstellar” by Allie. The other two pieces selected were Sam’s “Oxidation” and Allie’s “Into the Swamp”.

Congratulations to Lisa Heslop who was selected as a 2023 Patrick T Raven Grant recipient at The Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages held last week in Columbus. This grant will help reimburse her for her conference expenses.

Thank you to Matt Neff, Chris & Tony Malanga, Brian Arnold & Beckett Stark for all their work this season with our sports teams.

Elementary report by Kacey Thormeier: Pre-school screening completed for next year. 40ish kids for 30 spots. Kindergarten meeting tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. rescheduled from last week.

Right to Read Week, Grandparents Day, Mystery Readers all this week.  Art Show starts this Wednesday.  State Testing starts in April.

Dustin Schlachter moved, and Ben Camarillo seconded a motion to approve the following recommendations: Monthly Financial Reports Amended Permanent Appropriations for FY23 Exhibit C As per exhibit Julian & Grube contract for Medicaid AUP for FY24 and FY25 Exhibit D Donations Royal Publishing, Inc. $200 for Athletics Keller Logistics $250 for Girls’ Basketball.

Contract for 2023-2026. As this was a first reading no formal recommendation was required by the board.

2024 – 2025 School Calendar, first reading Deb Opdycke moved and Caleb Turnbull seconded a motion to approve the following recommendation: Classified Resignations Tim Calvin, Bus Driver, effective February 22, 2023 Victoria Santos, Paraprofessional, effective March 13, 2023 One Year Limited Teaching Contract effective 2023-2024 School Year Regular Board Meeting March 13, 2023- Page 3 Bethany Lamb – Family & Consumer Science – 15 years of experience, effective August 1, 2023 (Pending BCI/FBI checks and Other documentation) Non-renew Winter Athletic Supplementals Non-Teaching Staff Exhibit F ESL Tutor Vanessa Resendiz, effective March 13, 2023, tutor rate, pending BCI/FBI background check New Hire Classified Staff Larry Harsila, Bus Driver, Effective 3/13/2023 Administrative Retirement Chad Savage, Athletic Director, Effective 3/27/2023 Classified Resignation Shawn Gambler, Custodian, Effective 3/24/202.

Roll Call: Ayes: Benedict, Camarillo, Opdycke, Schlachter, Turnbull. Nays: None. Abstain: None. Thereupon, president declared the motion duly approved.

Board Meeting Dates Board of Education Meeting – April 10, 2023 – 6:00 p.m. Bryan Elementary Commons Business Advisory Council – May 10, 2023 – 7:15 a.m. in the Central Office.

Deb Opdycke moved, and Scott Benedict seconded a motion to enter executive session.

The board entered executive session at 7:04 PM The board exited executive session at 7:21 p.m.

Ben Camarillo moved, and Caleb Turnbull seconded a motion to approve the following recommendation: Approval of OAPSE Contract for 2023-2026.

Dustin Schlachter moved, and Deb Opdycke seconded a motion to enter executive session with the board’s attorney to discuss matters which are the subject of pending or imminent court action.

The board entered executive session at 7:21 p.m. The board exited executive session at 8:34 p.m.

Scott Benedict moved, and Deb Opdycke seconded a motion to adjourn.
