BRYAN (May 20, 2026) – A funny thing happened on what many thought would be Edgerton’s easy path to a Division VII district title game. Pettisville wanted to get to that championship game just as bad.
The Blackbirds’ Macy Hoylman pretty much kept the Bulldogs off balance at the plate all day, keeping Pettisville neck and neck with Edgerton deep into the contest.
However, the only real mistake Hoylman made in the game left the park in the form of Olivia Wallace’s long home run in the bottom of the fifth that ultimately gave Edgerton a 4-3 victory.
Edgerton was a little off from the get-go. Wallace walked Ali Genter to start the game, then threw away Sophie Beltz’s sacrifice bunt to allow Genter to race home from first for the initial run of the game.
Two outs later, Madison Miller beat out an infield hit that plated Beltz to double the Blackbird lead.
Edgerton cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first when Ayden King led off with a double and came home on a Wallace RBI single.
For the next two innings, Wallace and Hoylman matched each other pitch for pitch, putting goose eggs on the scoreboard.
Pettisville took a two-run lead in the fourth, again thanks to a Bulldog mistake in the field. Miller reached base for the second time and was sacrificed to second.
With two outs, an error on Kendall Vickery’s ground ball sent Miller home to give Pettisville (8-13) a 3-1 lead. Hoylman faltered a bit in the bottom of the fourth, walking two of the first three hitters.
Addyson King brought a run home with a base hit to left, then Ayden King marked the tying score with a groundout.
Leading off the fifth, Wallace gave Edgerton (16-4) the lead when she sent a high, deep drive over the left field fence for a 4-3 advantage.
On the mound, Wallace was just as solid, putting down the last 10 Blackbird hitters in order.
For the game, the Bulldog righty did not give up an earned run, striking out nine in the complete-game victory.
On most days, Hoylman’s performance would’ve been just as credible as she scattered seven hits while walking two and striking out five.
