After setbacks made it difficult for the Jones family to find a large enough, affordable place to live, it was Doug who reached out to Habitat for his family and applied for the program in 2014. Since being accepted, Doug and Spring have worked many hours, referred to as Sweat Equity, as part of their requirements. These hours include financial and budget training, community service at both the Swanton Library and The Open Door of Delta and of course, working on Habitat projects, fundraisers and events. The Jones children, Austin, Kodi and Elainna have all helped their parents with the requirements, and are excited that construction will be starting soon.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for my family to be able to afford a home with more space for my children to live and learn”, says Spring, who drives to Toledo daily to work at UTMC. Doug and Spring try to keep up with the hectic schedules that having three children brings. Austin and Kodi are part of the Bulldog football team; both have played other high school sports too. Elainna plays basketball and is a great cookie-seller for her Girl Scout troop.
The family looks forward to having Austin’s high school graduation party at their new home later this fall, after all the hard work of building the house is accomplished.
They know that without community support, donors and volunteers, this dream of affordable home ownership would not be possible. Spring adds, “That we can have a home to call our own, all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you.”
