PRESS RELEASE – The Farm and Agribusiness Management Career Development Event (CDE) test was recently conducted. This event tests the knowledge and skills of economic principles in farm business management.

Students answer questions dealing with machinery management, farm business management, futures, commodities, and taxes.

Placing first in the district was Tinora, second was Wauseon, third was Fairview, and fourth was Edon. Students placing in the district were: Emma Gerenscer, first; Grant Lymanstall, second; Brayden Burkholder, third, all from Tinora; and Levi Cox of Edon, fourth.

The Greenhand CDE test was administered on Feb. 23. The Greenhand Quiz consists of questions dealing with Ohio FFA History, National FFA History, current state officers, and items dealing with agricultural education.

Area teams placing in the district were: Genoa, first; Pettisville, second; Tinora, third; and Ohio Virtual Academy, fourth. Students placing were: Ali Genter of Pettisville, first; Margaret Montgomery of Genoa, second; Layla Goshen of Ohio Virtual Academy, third; and Jocelyn Belleville of Otsego, fourth.

The Outdoor Power CDE is a practical method of testing students’ skills to properly disassemble, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on a small gas engine.

Some skills include measuring ring end gap, crank end play, and engine RPM, or being able to properly grind valves, sharpen and balance blades, and clean air filters. Contestants need to properly use various equipment, and they also need to identify engine parts and complete a work order.

Placing first in the district was Four County Career Center (FCCC), second was Patrick Henry, third was Ayersville, and fourth was Archbold. Students placing in the district were: Levi Johnson of Patrick Henry, first; Levi Ankney of Ayersville, second; Travis Seagrave of FCCC, third; and Brian Scherdt of Patrick Henry, fourth.

The Veterinary Science CDE deals with technical knowledge and practical skills in the field of veterinary science. Knowledge is tested both in a written test and during hands-on activities.

First place went to Oregon Clay, second place went to Delta, third place went to Genoa, and fourth went to FCCC. Students placing were: Emily DeLeon, first; Rebecca Norden, second; and Melissa Crunkilton, third, all from Oregon Clay. The fourth-place individual finisher was not available at press time.

The District FFA Agriculture Power Diagnostic Contest was held at Redline Equipment in Sherwood. The contest teaches students to recognize malfunctions of gasoline or diesel engines and to eliminate problems.

The skills agriculture education students learn in troubleshooting make them better equipment operators by giving them practical experience in identifying and correcting engine malfunctions. The contest is scored on the number of malfunctions corrected, safety, tool use, and the quality of workmanship, plus a test.

Placing first in the district was FCCC (Jared Cripen and Lakota Doxtator), second was Fairview (Ethan Guilford and Owen Speiser), third was Pettisville (Ben Nagel and Ty Morrison), and fourth was Edgerton (Sam Dockery and Bryce Schroeder).

CDEs are an extension of the local agricultural education classroom and serve as an authentic application of the curriculum in which students are instructed.

Through agricultural education and the FFA, amazing opportunities exist for FFA members. With over 300 careers in agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources, FFA members can look forward to unlimited success.

They are future chemists, business owners, politicians, community leaders, veterinarians, farmers, and teachers. The skills obtained through FFA will serve a student for life.
