The Millcreek Township Trustees met in regular session on Monday, February 23, at the Alvordton-Millcreek Township Hall.
Trustees in attendance were Bob Short, Don Kunkle, and Don Kuney. Also in attendance were Fiscal Officer Emma Short, township maintenance employee Matt Cox, and Fire Chief Tony Carpenter.
Local resident Marlin Cummins addressed the trustees concerning the speed limits on U.S. Route 20 in Alvordton, suggesting the township should put up new speed limit signs in the village.
“We had talked about it last month that road signs on the state route are under the authority of the Ohio Department of Transportation,” Short responded.
“I had talked to Christopher Waterfield at ODOT in Bowling Green and he said what they likely take into consideration is traffic flow and density of population, and that’s the big thing.”
Short continued, “Yes, it’s an unincorporated village, but there is a whole lot of difference between the amount of people within the distance through the village and there is a mile out in the country.”
“That’s what determines how ODOT sets the speed limit in any given point on a state highway.”
Cummins responded, “I’m amazed and it’s probably been 20 years since I called and complained about something. They did all of that studying stuff and they raised the speed limit and that kind of shocked me.”
Once the village changed from incorporated to unincorporated status in 2007, the state conducted a traffic study and found justification to raise the speed limit.
Carpenter reported that six people are currently attending a first responder class, which will be finished by April 21.
He also said nine firefighters recently attended the Angola Fire School, which took place on February 21.
He also reminded the trustees of the upcoming pancake and sausage supper on Saturday, February 28, at the fire department.
With no further business, the meeting adjourned. The next meeting will be on Monday, March 30, at 8 p.m.
