The Montpelier Parks and Recreation Board addressed several seasonal park and pool updates during its May 6, 2026, meeting, including maintenance concerns and questions surrounding local Pony League participation.

Concerns regarding local Pony League participation were raised during the meeting. Fritsch relayed concerns from a parent who stated approximately 22 children are currently playing on a single team instead of being divided into two teams.

The reason for the reduction remains unclear, though possible coach shortages were mentioned. Gordon suggested adding additional non-league games to provide players with more field time, while Ramos said he would contact league commissioners for further information.

Board members approved the previous meeting minutes and financial statement before hearing updates from Recreation Director Sandy Gordon and Nick Ramos.

Ramos reported that the pool’s flow meter has shown signs of restricted water flow. He said the issue may be connected to the sand filter or restrictions within galvanized pipes. Additional pool work included general maintenance as summer approaches.

The Board also discussed staffing preparations ahead of pool season. According to Ramos’s report, the department has been working with the Williams County YMCA for lifeguard certifications.

While re-certification efforts are still ongoing, officials stated there are currently enough certified lifeguards on staff for the pool to open as scheduled.

In park updates, Angel Fritsch shared that the Montpelier Civic League hopes to begin its landscaping project at the south of the municipal park later this spring. This would include a replacement sign and entrance corner near Platt Street and Brown Road.

Gordon also updated the Board that Chuck Moore of the Montpelier Area Foundation expressed interest in reviewing information regarding potential shade structures at Founders Park. Moore will review to see if the foundation may assist with funding for the project.
