Wauseon School Board Shares Joy Of Special Presentations

The beginning of the May 18, 2021 meeting of Wauseon Board of Education held many joyful moments as Superintendent Troy Armstrong and others had the pleasure of giving out some very special awards and diplomas. Amongst those were:

1. Peyton Richer “for her stellar leadership skills as a student bus helper on Mr. Dennis Peabody’s bus #28”

2. Noah Harman “for being named State Champion in his category at the 2021 OSDA State Speech Tournament on March 5&6, 2021.”

3. A posthumously awarded Wauseon High School Diploma to World War II Veteran Victor P. Dominique, presented to his daughter Mrs. Brenda Thierry


4. Chelsea McCullough for a Wauseon High School Diploma after successful completion of all state and local requirements through the ODE’s 22+ Adult High School Diploma Program

The board heard a proposal from Mr. Bart Graf, WHS Alumni, to rename Harmon Field to include the name of Mr. Larry L. Fruth, longtime WEVS employee/coach and current Board member. No action was taken on this.’

Two presentations were seen, the first from Poggemeyer Design Group regarding the upcoming bid for the WPS roof replacement, and the second from a representative from Dynamic Energy Services regarding the energy project.


The Board reviewed the District Equity Statement for future action, and approved the minutes of the previous meeting and the bills and financial reports as presented.

They accepted with gratitude the following donations: For the Pole Vault pole – $466 from Tomahawk Trot and $325 from Joe and Jen Allen Foundation; For the WES Food Pantry – $100 from Velma Horst, Boxes of Treats from Knights of Columbus, Summer Activity Bags from Mallorie Hannon, Personal Wellness Kits from Wauseon FFA, and $55 from Wauseon Lions Club; For WES Food Service – $120 from Harlen and Luann Goertzen; $200 for each of the classes of 2021 and 2022 from VFW; $50 from Caroly Short for the Joe Seventh Step on the Starter Scholarship; From Wauseon Athletic Boosters – $1599 for Softball Uniforms and $360.85 for NWOAL Plaques; $250 from Project Hope to Spanish Honor Society for mentors; and Screen prep material, technical assistance and time from Nick Tule/The Sports Place at Ace for WEVS Art 4 Classroom.

In regular items, the Board Approved:

-purchase of Property/Fleet/Liability/Excess Liability Insurance from Hylant Administrative Services of Toledo, Oh, DBA Ohio School Plan effective July 1, 2021- June 30, 2022


-Allowed the following adult groups to purchase liability coverage under the school program at a cost of $70 per group: Parents Supporting Schools, Wauseon After Prom Committee, Wauseon Athletic Boosters and Wauseon Music Boosters

-Adoption of FY21 permanent appropriations

-Modifications and supplemental modifications to the FY21 Certificate of Estimated Resources

-Transfers of funds as needed

-Creation of the “Budget Set-A-Side” fund and authorization of the treasurer to set aside funds ($49,000 from General Fund) for the construction of a press box at the girls’ softball field and to set aside funds ( $623,706.85 from General Fund) for the construction of a bus garage at a location to be determined at a later date.

-FY21 May Five year forecast as presented

-Rachel Wixey and Associates Sub list as presented

-Offering the following administrators a three year administrative contract effective August 1, 2021 through July 31, 2024: Matt Hutchinson Athletic Administrator, Michelle Leatherman Director of Instructional Services, Timothy McQuade School Psychologist, and Blake Young WPS Principal

-One Year Administrative contract to Sonia Jacobs as the WEVS Covid 19 Coordinator, effective August 1, 2021 through July 31, 2022

-Accepting the resignations of Elizabeth Davis as the WEVS ELL Coordinator; Carrie Jeffries as a WES Intervention Specialist; and Anna Vogelgesang as the WES Music Teacher, all effective at close of 20-21 school year; Molly Pfund as the WES Secretarial Assistant, effective May 25, 2021; and Lisa Rupp as a substitute bus driver, effective April 13, 2021.

-Offering One year limited Certificated Teaching Contracts to Cassandra Plageman as a WPS Preschool Teacher, Hayley Callahan as a WPS Preschool Itinerant Teacher, and Alyssa Ruffier as a WEVS Speech Language Pathologist
-Transfers of Brittani Gerken from a WES Intervention Specialist to a WES (Cross Categorical) Intervention Specialist;

-Offering One year Limited Classified Contract to Nancy Badenhop as a WPS Sweeper and to Stacie Duncan as a Full time Bus Driver for the 21-22 school year

-Offering One year Limited Outside Supplemental Contract to Matt Mennetti as Head boys Golf Coach; to Nik Encalado as Varsity Volley ball coach; to Isaac Jeffers as 9th Grade Football Coach (all pending)

-Acceptance of Resignation of Tracy Elson as the Varsity Assistant Boys Soccer Coach and Approve as a Volunteer Soccer Coach for 21-22 school year

-One year limited outside supplemental contracts to nineteen individuals for Sports leadership in 21-22

-Seven individuals as Volunteer Coaches for 21-22 and one more pending receipt of necessary documents

-Shelly Borton, Mark Britsch, Matt Hutchinson, Ashley Oyer and Santana Villarreal as OHSAA Tournament Workers, retroactive to May 14, 2021 and effective May 21, 2021

-Amended motion to reflect Brittany Schroeder being offered a continuing contract for 21-22

-Request from Breanna Coleman-Davis for early completion and to be included in the Class of 2021 Ceremony

-Service Agreement between the Wauseon Exempted Village School District and the Northwest Ohio Education Service Center for 21-22

-Resolution authorizing 2021-22 membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA)

-Suspended a compensation policy

-Motion to approve a list of Seniors for the WHS Class of 2021 Commencement to be held on May 30, pending completion of all requirements

Before adjourning, the Board heard a report from Jennifer Grime, Director of Student Services. The next BOE meeting is scheduled for June 21, 2021 at 5:30 p.m.
