Richard Apt (1930-2023)

Richard Lavon Apt, 93, as resident of Montpelier for nearly all his life, passed away on February, 19, 2023 at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers in Bryan.

He was born on January 21, 1930 in Florence Township to L.J. and Ila (Winzler) Apt. Richard honorably served his country in the 82 Airborne Division for the U.S. Army and as paratrooper and code clerk, during the Korean War.

On August 7, 1954 he married Barbara Ireland in Montpelier and she preceded him in death on December 14, 2017.

Richard worked as a machinist for 42 years at Aro in Bryan, retiring in 1994. He also was the co-owner of QP Inc, a machine shop in Montpelier.


Upon retirement, Richard worked for the Montpelier Auto Auction for 7 years. In his free time, Richard enjoyed bowling, golfing and going to the Montpelier Senior Center.

He is survived by his children, Angela (Duane) Moor and Alan (Becky) Apt, all of Montpelier; five grandchildren, Douglas (Michelle) Moor, Laurie (Brian) Caudill, Aaron Apt, Aundrea (Tom) Gamboe and Thane (Kasey) Apt; ten great grandchildren, Alexandra and Ashley Caudill, Abbigail (Matt) Mason, Gwendolyn and Ethan Moor, Benjamin, Alaina and Ramsey Gamboe, Brentley, Tinley and Addaley Apt; brother, Charles Apt and his faithful canine companion Lorna.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara Apt; brother, Donald Apt; and sister, Shirley Brandeberry.


Visitation for Richard will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023 from 4-7 pm at the Thompson Funeral Home on Main Street in Montpelier. A funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11 am at the funeral home with Pastor Eric Dailey to officiate. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier with military rites provided by the Montpelier Veterans.

Donations may be made to the Montpelier Senior Center or Montpelier American Legion Post 109 or Williams County Humane Society.
