A crowd gathered Thursday afternoon at the corner of Elm Street and Shoop Avenue for a heartfelt dedication celebrating Dr. Jayantilal Galani, whose generous donation of land to the Wauseon Public Library is expected to shape the institution’s future for years to come.

The event, known as the Galani Gala, was held at 440 E Elm Street, the site of the donated property. Attendees were treated to refreshments, words of thanks, and a vision for what the space could someday become.

Although no specific timeline has been established for construction, library officials see the gift as a pivotal first step toward the development of a modern and expanded library facility.

Dr. Galani, a retired internal medicine physician who practiced in both Wauseon and Napoleon, said the idea stemmed from his involvement in supporting a successful children’s library project in Toledo. Inspired by that experience, he turned his attention to his hometown.

“I saw this piece of land sitting empty for a long time, and I thought it could become something valuable for the community,” Galani said.

After approaching the library board with the idea, he offered to cover the cost of the land himself, ultimately gifting it for the public good.

The Wauseon Public Library Board responded with enthusiasm, though initially surprised by the offer. “It just kind of dropped out of the sky,” said board president Ann Oberski.

“You don’t say no to a gift like this. It’s amazing to see so many people come out today to support the future of the library.”

The property is expected to serve as the future home of a new library building. Dr. Galani is already working with experts in library design and hopes the project will be completed within five years.

He emphasized his deep connection to education, noting that he used to go to the library all the time for studies when he was younger.

In addition to the land donation, Dr. Galani has pledged further support and expressed confidence that the community can raise the funds needed to bring the project to life. “Once we have the walls up, people will come forward to support it. I believe in this town,” he said.

The event reflected not just a gesture of generosity, but also a deep sense of community. “This is a tight-knit place,” Oberski added.

“We were all raised here, and we care about what happens here. It means so much to celebrate something hopeful together.”
