Swanton’s newest and sweetest downtown eatery, The Spot, held its ribbon cutting and official grand opening during Saturday night’s Swanton Summer Block Party.
The Spot, which offers ice cream, fresh-made donuts, freeze dried candy, and a variety of drinks, first opened with a limited menu in early June before adding its fan-favorite donuts late last month.
“Our first day that we were actually selling donuts, we sold out in 26 minutes,” owner Trevor Bowman said. “Then the next couple days it was 40 minutes, 40 minutes – we kept trying to make more, make more, make more. We got the process down pretty good now to where we’re lasting a couple hours.”
Bowman said the top seller is the maple bacon donut – complete with two full strips of bacon, followed by the Boston creme donut, which is so full he said they jokingly call it the “Boston Big Mac.”
Despite regularly selling out, the crew made extra donuts for Saturday evening’s block party so people who hadn’t had a chance yet were able to try some.
Baker Amber Willard said they make about 600 to 800 donuts a day, handmaking not only the pastry itself but the frostings and fillings.
“I get here in the middle of the night. If you drive by at 1 a.m. you can smell donuts already,” Willard said.
Swanton Area Chamber of Commerce President Delray Busch was pleased with The Spot’s quick success, not least of all because of its location in the former chamber building at the intersection of Zeiter Way and Main Street.
“We’re super excited to have them in town. People have been wanting more restaurants and things like that,” Busch said. “It’s been a really good fit. I have heard nothing but positive things and my family, especially, has eaten a lot of donuts since they’ve been in town.”
Additional block parties – put on by the chamber – are scheduled for September 27 and October 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the designated outdoor refreshment area (DORA) zone focused in the area around N. Main Street’s intersections with Dodge Street and Zeiter Way.
