The Edon School Board meeting on March 7 began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by roll call. Four of the five board members, Jackie Schaffter, Patti Eicher, Cody Best and David Wehrle, were present.
The 2021 Edon football team appeared before the school board, after being named Academic All-Ohio. The team had the eighth highest GPA out of all five Ohio football divisions. Head football coach Bob Olwin presented the plaque to board president Cody Best.
Next, the school board approved of the consent agenda from seven events.
Those events included approval of the regular meeting minutes from February 14; approving of the financial reports for February; approved the request for amended certificate from the county auditor; approval of donations; approving the February 2022 NWOESC Paraprofessional and teacher substitutes lists and approval of an overnight student trip for a senior retreat for March 26-27.
Treasurer Deborah Nester reported that revenue was up $31,000 and that expenses were down.
Edon Elementary School principal Jennifer Ripke stated that sports camps are scheduled for June and July and she will be sending out invitations very soon.
Ripke said that she was glad to see the numbers for pre-kindergarten screening is high. The 4H will be presenting to third graders and a breakfast potluck was held during the professional development for the teaching staff.
Ripke also talked to the staff about the new curriculum and Ripke reported that fourth graders will be learning cursive for the first time.
She also reported that J.A. can’t get enough volunteers to work with the school this year, but will still send a curriculum if it was wanted.
Superintendent Anthony Stevens reported that school enrollment is down slightly to 505, but was not alarmed, because he knew it was coming.
He also stated that his office was being trained into the new school spring program and that it will be a good tool. He will push this resource.
As far as new concrete that will be put in, Stevens said that Williams County uses five inch concrete and he is hoping to put in a bid for concrete in the next week or two.
Stevens said that more golf simulator information will be coming soon, as there is a lot of interest in people wanting to get involved with the project.
Stevens also stated that the cost of 100 chrome books will be roughly $24,000. They will move forward with that and plan to use the chrome book resources for next year.
In new business, there are three organizations bidding on the sealing and striping project. Stevens said that he will be in on the bid, on the board’s behalf. There will have to be a committee meeting on the project, soon.
In old business, it was decided that the possible academic committee will be discussed next January. In the meantime, Stevens said that he will reach out to other districts who have similar committees.
