Hilltop Lady Cadets ‘Little Big Horned’ By The Wauseon Lady Indians In Doubleheader Sweep

WEST UNITY: April 5, 2014 – The Hilltop Lady Cadets carried a 2-0 lead over the Wauseon Lady Indians going into the sixth inning of their opening game on April 5. It was there that the Tribe unleashed the fury of their bats, turning the Lady Cadets’ victory into a scene from Custer’s last stand.

Brooke Whipple clobbered a 2-run tater in the sixth to take the lead, then Ashley Smith followed up with another 2-run bomb in the seventh to give Wauseon a 5-2 win in the first game. The second game was an all-out assault by the Lady Indians as they wiped up Hilltop, 16-0.

Game #1

Brooke Whipple went the route for the Lady Indians, allowing 2 unearned runs on 9 hits. She had a single to go along with her 2-run homer.


To go along with her 2-run dinger, Alex Smith clocked an RBI double. Oliviah Hicks had a single and a double, Faith Hicks had a trio of singles, and Brianna Coblentz, Tiffany King, Alex Whipple and Jordan Sloan each had a base hit.

Jessica Suboski went the first 5 2/3 innings for Hilltop, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned on 8 hits and a walk, fanning 4. Bailey Funkhouser was tagged with 2 runs on 2 hits in 1 1/3 inning of work.

Brooke Chapin had a double for the Lady Cadets, with Adreyn Yates driving in a run with a pair of singles. Shayla Coffman and Brittney Mocherman each had 2 singles, and Allie Schmitt and Sydney Schmitt each had a base hit

Game #2


As cold as the Hilltop bats were, the Wauseon bats were the opposite in this lopsided event.

Sam Norman pitched 5 innings for the Lady Indians, giving up 2 hits, striking out 3 and walking one.

Brooke Whipple, Smith and Hayley Chamberlain carried the big bats for the Tribe in game #2. Smith and Chamberlain each hit a 3-run homer, and Brooke Whipple added a solo shot as part of going 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and a single.   Hicks went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs;  Alex Whipple went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, and King went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Norman plated a run with a pair of singles, and Banister clocked a double.

Hannah Bleikamp got the start for Hilltop and was knocked out after giving up 7 runs, 5 earned on 4 hits and 2 walks, fanning 2 in 1 1/3 inning. Funkhouser again came on in relief, and was beaten up for 9 runs, 6 earned on 10 hits and a walk, striking out a pair.

Mocherman and Chapin collected the only two hits for Hilltop.
