Wauseon Council Tabs Jeff Stiriz As Council President At January Meeting

The January 4 meeting of the Wauseon City Council was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Mayor Huner.

Mr. Thomas A. McWatters III, Director of Law, administered the oath of office to newly elected Mayor Huner for the term January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2019. Mayor Huner then administered the oath of office for newly elected council members, Shane Chamberlin, Jeff Stiriz and Scott Stiriz for the term January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2019.

Nominations were opened for the post of Council President. Councilor Chamberlin nominated Jeff Stiriz as Council President. Councilor Kost moved and seconded by Councilor Schamp to close the nominations. With no dissenting votes, Councilor Chamberlin moved and seconded by Councilor Kost to nominate Jeff Stiriz as Council President. Mr. Stiriz was unanimously elected as Council President for term January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2017. Councilor Chamberlin thanked Councilor Kost for the last two years served as Council President. Mayor Huner concurred, and stated that Councilor Kost did a great job.

In reports to Council, David Wright, Regional Planning Director, reported that he forwarded the information to be placed on the city and county’s website for the Downtown Revitalization grant. It contains the application, procedure for applying and boundary map of the district. He encouraged anyone interested in participating to contact him at the Regional Planning office.

Keith Torbet, Wauseon Chief of Police, stated that there are two motions on the agenda for the evening. The first is for the VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) grant for $79,000 to cover our local victim advocate. It is an in-kind match, which comes at no cost to the city. The second is for the JAG grant which is for $16,000 total, with a 10 percent match from the city, for purchasing cameras throughout the city.

Chief Torbet also reported that on Friday, February 19, 2016, Mark Weaver will coming up to give a Public Records and Social Media class at the city. We will be offering it to the city employees first, and then open it up to other public entities.

Code Administrator Tom Hall reported that the site work is done for the new doctor’s office on Shoop Ave. He met with Matt Gilroy, Fulton Co. Economic Director, on working on filling up the empty business spaces on Shoop Ave.

Director of Public Service Dennis Richardson reported that the 2016 chemical bids are in the process of being awarded. The East Clarifier Repaint has been put out for rebid, and that bid opening is January 25, 2016. Mr. Richardson gave an update on the Linfoot Street project.

Jamie Giguere, Director of Finance, reported that she is working on year end reports and will have that information at the next meeting.

Mr. McWatters reported that he is working on the EMS and Fire Chiefs’ bylaws.

In items of new business, Mayor Huner stated that the council committees as well as the boards and commissions will be ready to be presented at the next council meeting.

Council approved the Justice Assistance Grant, as well as the VAWA Grant without dissent, and with no further business to address, adjourned for the evening.
