Emanuel Paul Shaffer, 65, of Irene Ct., Fayette, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, May 22, 2014, at Sunny’s Campground near Wauseon. He was born July 4, 1948, in Wauseon, to the late Emanuel Ira and Creta (Jones) Shaffer. He married Cheryl Milliman on November 18, 1967, at the Fayette Christian Church-Disciples and she survives.
Paul was a 1967 graduate of Fayette High School and a life-long resident of Fayette. He also attended Northwest State Community College where he studied to be a journeyman’s technician. Paul worked as a maintenance technician at the former Fayette Tubular Products, and later retired in 2003 from Sauder’s Woodworking in Archbold.
Paul was active in the Fayette community, where he was formerly a village councilman, coached little league and softball, helped with cub scouts and boy scouts, and served on the Pleasant View Union Cemetery board. He was a member of the Gorham-Fayette Fire Department for over 15 years, and was the first EMT in Fulton County when he started in 1974. Paul loved fishing, camping, and woodworking, but his greatest passion was his beloved kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 46 years, Cheryl, are their two sons, Robert (Toni) Shaffer of Monroe, TN, and Jeremy (Susan) Shaffer of Fayette; two daughters, Desiree (Kevin) Snyder of Fayette, and Megan (Israel) Lerma of Fayette; a sister, Vicki (Gary) Durling, of Hudson, MI; nine grandchildren, Marisa, Hailey, Hannah, Jacob, Dilan, Emily, Emma, Elijah, and Caleb; and five great-grandchildren, Preslye, Braxton, Brooklyn, Paityn, and Blaine.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister in childhood, Donna Marie; and his mother-in-law, Betty Kline.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider memorial donations in honor of Paul to the American Cancer Society or the Fayette Friends for the Fields.
