Gerald “Gary” J. Sholl, 83, of Hicksville, Ohio, passed away Monday, January 23, 2023, in his residence.
Gary was born March 27, 1939, at the former St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, son of the late Joseph G. and Opal C. (Shull) Sholl.
He was a 1958 graduate of Hicksville High School, where he was a star running back for the Aces, breaking many school records, and earning player of the week on multiple occasions.
After graduation, Gary had an opportunity to continue playing football at Defiance College on scholarship but decided to enter the workforce.
While pursuing the construction industry, Gary was able to continue his athletic career by playing a few seasons for the Fort Wayne Tigers semi-pro football team.
Gary started Sholl Construction in 1961, and successfully ran the business for 21 years, building over 200 structures in the tri-county area, with notable projects including Sholl Terrace, Brown Funeral Home, and private residence.
Gary married Ellen J. Conley on October 31, 1964, in Mark Center, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on December 31, 2012. While running his construction business, Gary owned and operated the Hicksville Lumber Yard for five years.
Gary was a 35-year member of the Carpenters Union Local 232, and a 30-year member of the Hicksville Eagles Aerie #2556.
In addition to his love of football and construction, Gary enjoyed the time spent at their family cottage on Marble Lake.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Lori (Larry) Sievert of Wauseon, Ohio; four grandchildren, Kacey, Jacob, Michael and Josie; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Gwen Dowell of Hicksville; one brother-in-law, Lowell Conley of Hicksville; many nieces and nephews; and special family friends, Amy & Shane Flohe of Hicksville, and Erin Boyd of Hicksville.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of over 48 years, Ellen J. Sholl; one son, Joseph Sholl; three brothers-in-law, Bob Dowell, Larry Conley, and Leroy Conley; and a sister-in-law, Ines Hart.
In honoring Gary’s wishes, there will be no visitation or services held at this time. Arrangements are under the care of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home & Crematory, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville, Ohio 43526.
