Nancy R. (Dewey) Barnes, age 76, of Wauseon, passed away suddenly in her home on Friday, January 10, 2025.
She was born on June 23, 1948, at an Army base in Pennsylvania, to Bill and Marie (Dewey), who are both deceased.
She was always a loving and caring person, and had a major love for cats.
She was a Wauseon High School graduate of 1966, and later a graduate of Riverside School of Nursing, class of 1969, and was the class treasurer. She later enlisted in the United State Air Force Nursing Corp from 1970-1972 during the Vietnam War, and rose to the rank of Captain.
She spent many years working as a Head Nurse of Pediatrics at Riverside Hospital, Toledo Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s, and Oak Ridge Hospital in Tennessee. She also working for Fulton County Health Center for a short time. She retired from nursing in 2011.
She belonged to the Alumni of Riverside Hospital School of Nursing and was the current recording secretary of the group. Nancy enjoyed spending time at lunch with a group of friends that called themselves the “hot chicks from 66.”
Nancy enjoyed taking dancing lessons and participating in competitions at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio. On November 15, 1986, she married James “Jim” Barnes. If there was ever a perfect love story, it was Jim and Nancy Barnes.
Surviving Nancy is her cat, Blackjack (who was her baby); sister, Denise (Dean) Galbraith; Chrislyn (Michael Shelhart; two step-sons, Eric (Jenni) Barnes and Brian (Emily) Barnes; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill (Marie) Dewey; and nephew, Will Figy.
Visitation for Nancy will take place on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 4pm to 8pm, at the First Christian Church in Wauseon. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the church, at 11am, with Pastor Michael Doerr officiating. Burial will follow at the Wauseon Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions for Nancy be made to the Fulton County Humane Society or American Cancer Society.
