Maria Witte, 89 years, of Sherwood, Ohio, passed away Monday, January 23, 2023, at Kingsbury Place, Defiance, Ohio.
She was born July 28, 1933, in Hartmanitz, Germany, the daughter of the late Anton and Franziska (Brandl) Hofmann.
For adventure and travel as a young adult, she first lived in Canada, then the United States, where she married Donald H. Witte on August 31, 1963, in Angola, Indiana. He preceded her in death on October 22, 1998.
Maria was a devoted wife and mother, caring for the needs of her family. Maria was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sherwood.
She was a member of the Ladies Aid and the quilters group. She was an excellent pie baker, who loved musicals, reading, animals, and traveling to see family in Germany. Most of all she loved to spend time with her family.
Maria is survived by her two daughters, Kris (Jeff) Haught of Hicksville, Ohio, and Brenda (Thomas) Needham of Worthington, Ohio; three sisters, Anni Eggs, Ella (Josef) Litterst and Gertrud Hofmann, all of Germany.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Gisela Heiliger and Rosel Eicke, and brother, Max Hofmann.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Monday, January 30, 2023, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 706 North Main Street, Hicksville. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 9088 Openlander Road, Sherwood, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the church with Pastor Eric Moquin officiating. Inurnment will follow in Sherwood Cemetery, Sherwood, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that those planning an expression of sympathy be directed to St. John Lutheran Church Building Fund, 9088 Openlander Road, Sherwood, Ohio 43556.
