MONTPELIER — It was one happy bus ride back to Pettisville as the Blackbirds made it a clean sweep winning both the boys and girls titles in the Buckeye Border Conference Track and Field Championships held Thursday and Saturday, May 14 and 16, at Pete Dreher Track Facility in Montpelier.

The Blackbirds held off runner-up Edon, 141-129, to capture its third straight boys’ crown. Montpelier was third (103.5) followed by North Central (96), Holgate (85), Hilltop (51.5), Fayette (28) and Stryker (24).

Leading the way for the Blackbirds was Kyle Galvin who claimed a pair of BBC titles winning the 800 (2:04.48) and 1600 (4:36.08). Casin Nofziger was the other individual champ for Pettisville winning the pole vault by clearing 13-6.

He also anchored the 3200 relay to a first-place time of 8:27.21 on Thursday. The relay also included Gavin Knierim, Tyler Wilburn, and Alex Galvin.

Pettisville also won the 1600 relay with Alex Galvin, Samuel Hartman, Wilburn, and Kyle Galvin with a time of 3:41.54.

There were plenty of other top individual performances highlighting the boys’ meet.

Kendol Brigle of Edon broke one of the oldest BBC meet records on Thursday, eclipsing the long jump mark of 21-0 ¼ set by Pettisville’s Lincoln Cobb in 1989 with a leap of 21-0 ¾, a half-inch improvement.

Not only did Brigle grabbed the spotlight, but so did Montpelier’s Braylon Hopper who made it a clean sweep in the sprint events, winning the 100 (10.96), 200 (22.37) and 400 (53.51) meter dashes. His teammate Logan Pontioius closed out an outstanding BBC track career in sweeping the shot put (57-½) and discus (157-7) crowns.

Eli Dickmann of Edon swept both the 110 (15.07) and 300 (40.03) hurdle events.

Also winning individual titles were Carter Eckley of North Central in the 3200 (10:13.60) and Jaxson Gray of Holgate in the high jump (5-10).

In the relay events, Edon’s 400 relay of Gauge Nester, Brigle, Dickmann, and Carson Stamper (44.81) took first place as did North Central’s 800 relay of Brenden Solano, Ashaun Dickey, Alex St. John and Zack Whitley (1:37.63).

Pettisville, despite winning just four events, captured its third straight BBC girls title with 129 points followed by Montpelier (102), Hilltop (101.5), Stryker (96.5), Edon (71), Fayette (62), Holgate (60) and North Central (28).

The Blackbirds got individual titles from Addison Davis in the high jump (4-8), Caite Wixom in the pole vault (7-6), Ariyah Miller in the long jump (14-11 ¼). The 800 relay of Grace Davis, Sophie Wyse, Maggie Ripke, and Addison Davis also won with a time of 1:59.32.

Tri-county Fuel

Kharleigh Kitchen of Montpelier and Addison Schang of Fayette, both competing in their final BBC meet, combined to win seven individual event titles between them.

Kitchen nearly accounted for half of Montpelier’s point total by sweeping the 100 (13.12) and 200 (26.98) meter dashes and the 100 (15.74) and 300 (47.63) hurdles.

Schang dominated in the distance events sweeping to victories in the 800 (2:34.15), the 1600 (5:47.82) and the 3200 (12:22.09) meter runs.

Other individual champions were Emily Suydam of Hilltop in the 400 (1:01.51), Jilian Eis of Holgate in the shot put (38-0) and Addi Snyder of Edon in the discus (111-1).

Krill Funeral

Stryker won three of the four relay events: 400 relay of Abby Oberlin, Reiss Creighton, Allie Ruffer, and Aubrey Clemens (55.18), the 1600 relay of Anne Donovan, Creighton, Ruffer, and Grace Froelich (4:31.97), and the 3200 relay of Donovan, Grace Froelich, Ruffer, and Oberlin (10:44.79).
