NAPOLEON – It was a total team effort for the Wauseon Indians boys track team as they captured the Division III district meet championship held on Thursday through Saturday, May 21-23 at Charles Buckenmeyer Stadium.
The Indians edged out runner-up Ottawa-Glandorf 98.25 to 96 to claim the district title in close fashion.
Wauseon qualified three relay teams and five individuals to the regional meet which begins on Thursday, May 28 at Piqua High School.
Leading the way for the Indians was Braylon Burkholder who captured the shot put title with a toss of 52-½ along with the 400 relay team of A’Zarrion Hicks, Weston Smith, Collin Mennetti, and Dylan Burkholder who won the event with a time of 44.38 seconds.
Hicks also qualified in two individual events for the Indians. He was runner-up in the long jump (20-9 ¾) and took third in the 110 hurdles (15.78).
Other individuals advancing for Wauseon were Aiden Wood who finished second in the 300 hurdles (41.08), Tristan Pena in the pole vault (12-0), and Sean O’Connor in the shot put (47-5).
Wauseon got a runner-up finish in the 800 relay with Mennetti, Clete Van Etten, Max Mouch, and Riley Riegsecker in a time of 1:32.07.
The 1600 relay of Otis Flowers, Van Etten, Tyler Tester, and Riegsecker were third with a time of 3:31.56.
Bryan advanced two individuals and two relay quartets to regionals.
Colton Sheline qualified with a runner-up finish in the 3200 (9:48.22) and was third in the 1600 (4:35.14). Josiah Cummins placed fourth in both the 1600 (4:38.10) and 3200 (10:18.37).
The 800 relay of Alex Diaz, Carson Benschoter, Evan Cassaubon, and Adam Elzey placed fourth (1:32.99) and the 3200 relay of Elijah Cummins, Khristopher Alspaugh, Jeremiah Taylor, and Josiah Cummins also placed fourth (8:46.15).
In the girls meet, Wauseon qualified three individuals and a relay team to regionals.
Kara Ehrsam was the lone district champion for the Indians. Ehrsam captured the shot put with a toss of 40-4 ¼.
Other individual qualifiers for Wauseon were Matea Burkholder who was runner-up in the pole vault (9-8), and Emmerie Rodriguez was fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.27 seconds.
The 400 relay of Zaeli Badenhop, Bentlei Rocha, Burkholder, and Adelynn Crossgrove grabbed the fourth and final regional berth with a time of 57.31 seconds.
Bryan’s Nicolette Stickney was the lone regional qualifier for the Bears. The senior placed fourth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:25.84.
