The Wauseon Fire Department received a check for $3,000 from the Wauseon Chamber of Commerce this past week. The check was presented on Tuesday, June 25th, and was comprised of proceeds from the Chamber’s annual Firecracker 5K.
The annual Firecracker 5K has been put on each year to allow people to have the opportunity to support their local communities’ fireworks show.
The fireworks themselves are purchased by the city and are shot off by Wauseon firefighters with the proper licensure.
The money collected by the chamber has been and will be used to keep up with equipment maintenance. Some of the maintenance in question includes firework racks, electronic launch systems, additional firework equipment, and regular wear and tear.
Fire Chief Phil Kessler explained that shooting off fireworks puts a good amount of strain and wear and tear on equipment. This money helps to ensure all equipment remains in working order and helps to bring in new equipment.
Kessler also explained that the money provided by the chamber also allows for money from the city to be used on fireworks.
If this money was not raised, money would have to come from elsewhere to keep up on maintenance. This makes sure money can be used to make the best show possible for residents.
“The money prevents the continual inflated increase of the cost for the show itself. We are only paying for product at this point. If we had to buy the equipment, there would be less product. We are able to do more fireworks because of it. It’s them supporting it that makes it a success.”
Chamber Director Bill Drummer also explained that they are happy to provide the help, due to what it brings local residents, and how it brings others into the area.
“We as a chamber are aware and are excited about the people it brings into town, and how it helps to bring people together.” The Wauseon Fireworks show is set to be held on July 3rd of this year.
